On December 8-9, 2022, "World City Day Series - 2022 9th International Conference on Underground Space Development" was successfully held in Shanghai, co-organized by Shenzhen University, Tongji University, Shanghai Civil Engineering Society and Municipal Engineering Branch of China Civil Engineering Society. The conference was chaired by Academician Qian Qihu, the recipient of the highest national science and technology award, and Academician Chen Xiangsheng, the president of our institute, was the honorary chairman of the conference. Wu Zhiqiang, Zhu Hehua and Liu Jiaping, academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Isam Shahrour, academician of French Academy of Water Resources, Zhou Yingxin, academician of Singapore Academy of Engineering, Yuan Yong, academician of European Academy of Sciences and Arts, Liu Qianwei, chief engineer of Shanghai Housing and Urban-Rural Development Management Committee, Tong Xiaohua, vice president of Tongji University, Yu Ning, president of Shanghai Civil Engineering Society, Zhang Yan, deputy director of Planning and Construction Bureau of Xiongan New Area Management Committee of Hebei Province, and Zhang Yan, deputy director of National Engineering Survey and Research Institute. Deputy Director Zhang Yan, National Engineering Survey and Design Master Wang Weidong and other academicians and experts participated in the conference and opened a dialogue with more than 100 experts and scholars in the field of underground space at home and abroad.

With the theme of "toughness, safety, green and low-carbon" and focusing on "top-level planning", the conference covered such fields as "digital intelligence", "technological innovation", "equipment manufacturing" and "urban renewal", etc. The conference set up three major topics: "comprehensive three-dimensional transportation and intensive utilization of underground space", "intelligent construction and operation and maintenance of underground space" and "urban renewal and toughness development of underground space", and hundreds of experts and scholars conducted enthusiastic exchanges.

Academician Chen Xiangsheng, president of the Institute, delivered a speech as the chairman of the conference and gave a report entitled "Status of Infrastructure Construction in China". Academician Chen Xiangsheng pointed out that "the theme of the conference is "resilience, safety, green, low-carbon", which fully reflects that the International Conference on Underground Space Development follows the national call and the characteristics of the industry development needs, implements the important instructions of General Secretary Xi, and will definitely lead the new development in the field of underground space and strongly Promote all kinds of technological innovation and breakthrough. Underground space is an important part of the city, especially after the rapid development of urbanization in China, the rational use of underground space has become an urgent need to improve urban functions, promote the construction of smart cities and achieve sustainable urban development."

Our Vice President Prof. Xiaohua Bao, Prof. Mingwei Hu and Associate Prof. Chengyu Hong also participated in this event. During the conference, Prof. Hu Mingwei gave a lecture entitled "Driving Simulation and Human Factors Engineering Assessment of Urban Tunnel Lighting". The International Conference on Underground Space Development was launched in 2013, when the planning and reuse of the Shanghai World Expo Park and the construction boom of large-scale unified development of underground space were underway. The purpose of the conference is to build a high-end exchange platform of cutting-edge information and technology with scale and influence for the global urban underground space development field. The success of this conference strengthened the communication and exchange between our institute and domestic and foreign counterparts, deepened the understanding and cooperation between Chinese and foreign governments, universities and enterprises, and contributed to the construction of a green, intelligent and efficient urban underground space.
