ABSTRACT: This lecture focuses on the past, the present and the future of construction technologies as illustrated in major architectural, structural engineering and project management achievements in built infrastructure projects worldwide. A systematic approach to the development of construction means and methods is presented, including progressively new materials and equipment, leading to the current technologies in the second decade of the 21st century and beyond. These developments include 3-D printers used for construction projects and new robotics for terrestrial and extraterrestrial construction applications.
BIOGRAPHY: Prof. Skibniewski obtained his M.Eng. degree from Warsaw University of Technology, followed by M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Carnegie-Mellon University. Initially in his career he worked in industry as an engineer for the oldest engineering construction consulting firm in theUnited Statesfounded in 1881. His doctoral dissertation focused on the feasibility of robotics application in the construction industry. Prior to his current position at the University of Maryland, he was a professor of civil engineering, construction engineering and management, and associate provost at Purdue University. In mid-1980’s, Prof. Skibniewski created one of the first educational and research programs in construction automation and robotics in the United States and for over two decades he has been serving as editor-in-chief of Automation in Construction, an international research journal published by Elsevier. The author of Robotics in Civil Engineering, a monograph book published by Computational Mechanics Publications in 1988, he has also written over 300 papers and book chapters for various scientific publication outlets. Prof. Skibniewski has been a recipient of research awards from the U.S. National Science Foundation, from the American Society of Civil Engineers, and of other forms of scholarly recognition in theUnited Statesincluding several panel memberships at the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. Also, he has been elected to the memberships of the Russian Academy of Engineering and the Academy of Engineering inPoland. Earlier this year, he was named a Distinguished Visiting Fellow of the U.K. Royal Academy of Engineering.
